How do Christmas decorations affect the Feng Shui in your home?

Every year, millions of people put festive decorations up all around the inside and the outside of our homes and businesses including huge red, gold, silver and green displays to get in to the festive spirit of Christmas. I have been asked many times on Facebook and email to post an article about the effects that Christmas decorations can have on our homes from a Feng Shui point of view. If you are serious about Feng Shui, this will be a great article for you to read.

Surely if the decorations are only up for a few weeks the effect won’t be that serious?

Although we only put our Christmas decorations up on an average of three weeks of the year all of the different shapes, colours and associations to the elements can either have a positive or negative effect on your home. Luckily, the negative effects can be strongly dissipated if you follow the advice below.

What effects do Christmas trees have?

As you can imagine, real Christmas trees have a wood element although it is not too strong as the wood is dying from being cut down. The shape of Christmas trees is also associated with the fire element which can either have a positive effect or negative effect due to the productive and weakening cycle.

The best place to place a Christmas tree with regards to the annual and monthly flying stars in December 2011 would be in the northwest, west, southwest and northeast. The optimum directions would be in the northwest, west and the southeast of a room or building.

The areas to avoid placing your Christmas tree in 2011 with regards to the annual and monthly flying stars in December 2011 would be in the south, east and north of a room or building.

You can also place decorations in the southeast although this is mainly neutral in December 2011.

Why avoid placing Christmas trees in these areas?

A Christmas tree has strong energy whether it is real or artificial, its shape is fire shaped being pointed; its colour is associated to the wood element being green. Any flashing lights are classed as yang qi and all these elements of the five phases will have a negative effect on the south, east and north and can cause many problems. Think about the times you have heard of family arguments around Christmas time, this may seem such a small effect but sometimes the smallest things can be the catalyst to major disasters so please take this information seriously.

Will my head fall off if I put red tinsel up in the south or east in December 2011?

Putting Christmas decorations up in a certain area of your home that is not suited will not have a major effect on the Feng Shui of your home although it is still a good idea to avoid placing decorations like Christmas trees with flashing lights or any other Christmas activity that creates movement, noise or vibration in the areas listed above. If you wish to get more involved in researching the flying stars in your home, I would strongly recommend using the floor planner section of our Academy of Feng Shui software to find your personal best directions for your property. I would love to be able to do a feature on the fixed stars but these are unique to every single property as you need to input your compass directions and the year that the property was built.
